Why Is The First 100 Followers A Big Deal?

Every since I joined Medium a month ago, most of the articles on my feed have been ‘How To Gain 100 Followers’ or ‘Follow Me and I’ll Follow Back’ — and I don’t get why that’s so important.

Why isn’t it the first 200 followers, 500 followers?

Now the title of this article can be misleading, but I’m legit asking a question.

I’m on here for the following reasons:

• To write — it’s a passion
• To improve my writing skills
• To figure out my niche for my freelance writing career
• To read and engage on content I find interesting

If I get followers? Great! If I get claps and engagement? Perfect! Otherwise, I’ll still keep writing and improving on my craft.

What are your reasons for being on Medium? Does it matter to you if you get your first 100 followers?
