Simple and doable activities to show you care.

Some people fall in love at first sight, while others meet by chance at a book store/club or are introduced, and still others fall in love with someone on the other side of the world and have a long-distance relationship aka ldr.

Now no relationship is perfect, and no matter how you meet, there will always be challenges that you will both have to overcome. However, we can agree that long-distance relationships present a unique set challenges.

But they can work with a little extra effort!

Having a long-distance relationship isn’t easy. You’re in two different places in the world. It can be hard to stay connected when you’re not together in person. But there are some things you can do to keep the spark alive while you’re apart from your partner.

A friend of mine has been in a 5 year long-distance relationship, so I’ve learnt a thing or two from her.

Not going to lie, they did face challenges when they first started but overcame them through communicating with each other — which is SUPER essential.

Here are their top 4 date ideas:

1. Text throughout the day

In a long-distance relationship, you need to to show each other that you care. Day-to-day tasks such as work, errands, family and friends are important and since those things automatically occupy a lot of your time, it’s crucial that your partner gets your attention too. So texting throughout the day shows them that you care about them and the relationship and it’s a way to keep the spark (and banter) alive!

2. Pre-plan movie dates

Netflix and Amazon Prime have made it easier to watch movies or series together at a distance!

My friend and her partner pre-plan their dates just like you would in real life and then they use Discord (it’s a software similar to Skype but for gamers) where they share their screen and watch their choice of movies or shows.

The cool thing about this is if you’re in different countries, you get a variety of different movies and TV shows (on Netflix), as Netflix is customized based on region.

This is one of their favorite things to do, to be honest. It allows them to spend time together and gives them something to talk about!

3. Send gift packages to each other

This is a tough one, especially if you’re in different countries, because shipping fees can be expensive. But it is not impossible to do!

If you can afford to send each other physical things (a t-shirt with your perfume/cologne on it, a gift from Amazon or an online store, a mixed CD or letter), by all means do it!

Otherwise, here are some ideas to show you care:

  • Make and send a mix Spotify playlist/Youtube list of songs that remind you of your relationship and feelings for each other
  • Write an email to each other expressing your feelings or conveying how much the relationship means to you
  • Send random meaningful messages to each other — to let them know you’re thinking of them
  • This one’s my favorite — like watching movies or TV shows, play online games together whether on the phone ,computer or console
  • Get on a video call and make a meal together

4. Plan a Trip to See Each Other

Talking on the phone and video calling can only go so far.

That in-person experience is absolutely necessary to figure out if you really are compatible.

So planning to see each other even if only for a short time, is totally worth it!

If you can’t afford to do it on your own, plan on how the both of you can make it happen. Maybe you can both save up and go halfsies on a ticket?

It’s hard, I know. It would be so much easier to just be in person.

But making small efforts to show that you care goes a long way! While doing all this, plan for the future and figure out the best way forward.

Relationships are based on compromise, so keep that in mind.

It’s a give and take situation and in this case one of you will have to make the bigger sacrifice by moving to be with your partner — so just make sure you’re ready to do that.
